To obtain these, please ask at reception next time you visit the surgery - we cannot issue these over the phone or by post.

Lines open at 08:30 for appointments with doctors. These appointments are 10 minutes long.
If you have an urgent medical problem that cannot wait to the next available routine appointment and feel that you must be seen that day, you can ask for an urgent appointment. These appointments will be for 5 minutes to deal with a single problem only.
To make an urgent appointment please call before 10:30.
Over the past couple of years we have tweaked our appointment system to try and balance the demand to see a doctor with the demand for this to be within a reasonable time. There is no perfect system; if there was, we would all follow it. However every practice has its own peculiar system to fit with its own needs. This is how our system works.
- Each morning a doctor will have six appointment slots available for pre-booking up to 5 weeks in advance-these are the first to get booked and therefore blocked. This is why you are often told, ‘the doctor does not have any routine appointments available for two weeks’.
- In addition each doctor has six appointment slots that can be pre-booked 48 hours in advance, that is, they are saved from being booked too far in advance; for example on Monday morning 6 lots are released for Wednesday morning. Please note that these are not released and cannot be booked until 10.30am 2 days prior to the appointment.
- Finally the doctor has four slots saved for urgent on the day matters, that is, conditions that medically cannot wait until the next routine or 48-hour appointment slot. Unfortunately, a lot of these are taken up by patients for convenience sake with non-urgent routine matters such as coughs and colds. These appointments are limited to dealing with one problem i.e. the ‘urgent’ problem.
The system is repeated in the afternoon, but these are split 4/4/4.

When doctors are on leave, we have to use some of the 48 hour slots and change them to on the day ‘urgents’ to help cope with demand.
So many appointments at GPs throughout the land are taken by simple non-urgent matters that a few years ago patients would not think of going to see a doctor about, such as simple coughs or a runny nose. These matters were and can often be treated by self-care, for example, a simple visit to the pharmacist. Doctors cannot do anything for simple coughs and antibiotics do not work!
We are here to help those who need medical help that can only be provided by a GP or nurse, but this is made more difficult by people misusing the system.
Please think about whether you really need to see a doctor and whether this is really urgent.

Telephoning Your Doctor
The receptionist will normally take your number and ask the doctor to phone you back as soon as they are able; this is normally after morning clinics over the lunchtime period. If you can, please tell the receptionist what your call is about.
If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else. If you do not cancel or you leave it late and cancel within 10 minutes of your appointment time, we will record a 'Did Not Attend' against your record.
